Out of the Woodwork! Bringing Tom Miller’s Legacy to Light artfully explores the world of Baltimore artist Thomas Patton Miller (1945-2000), whose vibrant Afro-Deco style captured the spirit and culture of his hometown. This exhibition invites you to journey through Miller’s life, from his childhood in Sandtown-Winchester to his rise as one of Baltimore’s most iconic artists. Featuring artworks and artifacts that have surfaced since the inception of Tom Miller Week five years ago, this retrospective presents a rare glimpse into the personal and artistic legacy he left behind.
These pieces come from every corner of Baltimore City and County, lovingly preserved by family, friends, fans, and institutions dedicated to his memory. Curated by Deyane Moses, the exhibition artfully and “artifact-ually” guides visitors through Miller’s artistic evolution, showcasing his mastery of color, humor, and cultural commentary. His vibrant furniture, playful illustrations, and satirical takes on African American stereotypes reveal his ingenuity and boldness in redefining what art could be.
Opening on the 30th anniversary of Miller’s solo exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art and the proclamation of Tom Miller Day by then-Mayor Kurt Schmoke, Out of the Woodwork! is the first major retrospective to illuminate the full breadth of Miller’s vision. It celebrates his legacy as a cultural icon who transformed discarded objects into spirited works of art, uniting Black stories, Black features, and Black survival in every stroke. The exhibition is a tribute to his creative genius and a call to preserve his enduring impact on Baltimore’s cultural landscape
